Things to do in South Coast

The South Coast region has many things to do and enjoy ranging from the national parks and wilderness to the vast stretches of pristine beaches all of which surround the area. All the main towns are mainly located along the coastline and Wollongong is the largest town in the surrounding region. Shellharbour is a very popular destination and it is conveniently situated between Wollongong and the Kiama. Lake Illawarra offers many water sports activities such as jet skiing, sail boarding and windsurfing to name a few. The area has an abundance of wildlife including dolphins and whales which are frequently spotted around Jervis Bay..and Montague Island, Narooma, which is famous for its penguins and fur seals which make the island their home from late August to early December. You can also visit the Kiama Blowhole or for go hand gliding over Stanwell Tops and Helensburgh. There are also a number of small villages such as Berry which is a beautiful rural town famous for its markets, antiques and crafts. The list of things to do is endless!

History of South Coast

The South Coast region is rich in Aboriginal history. Historically the area was first settled by the wodi wodi aboriginal tribe. It is said that Captain Cook attempted to alight here in April of 1770 but was unable to land due to rough conditions at sea. The area was eventually settled by farmers and the timber industries. Once the Bulli Pass from Sydney was built in 1868 settlers poured in at a much faster rate. In the late 1880's a rail connection to Sydney was established and the areas famous coalmining industry was begun.

Landmark in South Coast

The South Coast region has many natural land marks some of which include; The Kiama Blowhole, situated on Blowhole Point behind the points lighthouse, Seven Mile Beach which is located south of Gerroa is a spectacular stretch of beach which is protected within its own National Park. The Nan Tien Temple which is located in Wollongong is the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. In Kangaroo Valley you will find Hampden Bridge which was built in the 1890's, and is Australia's oldest suspension bridge.

Shopping in South Coast

Each of the towns in the South Coast region all have local stores for everyday conveniences and most the larger towns have larger supermarkets and specialty shops. Wollongong Central has all the large department stores as well as smaller specialty stores.

Restaurants & Cafes in South Coast

The South Coast area has many choices for every taste. Fresh seafood is abundant in the area, and if you enjoy oysters, be sure to visit Batemans Bay where you will be able to taste the local Clyde River oysters which are often hailed by many food critics as some of the best in the world. There are also a host of fantastic food festivals and markets which take place throughout the year in most of the coastal villages.

Sports & Fitness in South Coast

The South Coast region offers a wide selection of activities. The most popular are mainly water sports such as surfing, game fishing and sailing to name a few. The area also has many local sporting clubs which include tennis, football, soccer, athletics and there are numerous gyms and swimming pools in the surrounding area.

Transport in South Coast

Trains and coach services arrive into Wollongong from Sydney and there are local buses which connect and service the area. Illawarra Regional Airport is the South Coast regions airport with flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
